646f9e108c Avid movie-watcher and video store clerk Bazil has had his life all but ruined by weapons of war. His father was killed by a landmine in Morocco and one fateful night a stray bullet from a nearby shootout embeds itself in his skull, leaving him on the verge of instantaneous death. Losing his job and his home, Bazil wanders the streets until he meets Slammer, a pardoned convict who introduces him to a band of eccentric junkyard dealers including Calculator, a math expert and statistician, Buster, a record-holder in human cannonball feats, Tiny Pete, an artistic craftsman of automatons, and Elastic Girl, a sassy contortionist. When chance reveals to Bazil the two weapons manufacturers responsible for building the instruments of his destruction, he constructs a complex scheme for revenge that his newfound family is all too happy to help set in motion. A man and his friends come up with an intricate and original plan to destroy two big weapons manufacturers. So it's a fairy tale - but not one for (young) children - unless parents want to get into a discussion of what land mines do to people.

Heavy duty documentaries make little impact - I think the gentleness and total lack of reality here is an antidote for the dead serious issue at the center. This reminds me a bit of Dr. Strangelove characters: yes, over the top but - so it's not as if the reality isn't perhaps more absurd. Not too heavy handed in my view - the audience doesn't really need to struggle to understand and that's okay.

A bit Chaplinesque, as well. And an underdog story - common in the movies, but then all story lines are repeated, with different characters and context, and the question is - is it done well? Since in real life, the underdogs get slammed, it's nice to see them win in an engaging film. Micmacs is a French film by acclaimed director Jean Pierre Jeunet.

The movie departs from an excellent idea, criticism against the weapon industry and the men who run it, done through comedy. The atmosphere, colors, mood and mechanical artifacts of the movie are very good and quintessentially Jeunet. The micmacs at the Tire-larigot recycling site are an interesting bunch of people, with interesting stories and abilities. The end is very good, too.

However, the script is unfocused and not well developed, as looks like/feels like a classic unpretentious cartoon persecution story with stereotypical gags and situations, so the anti-militarist message -which is the whole point of the movie- gets completely diluted. In fact, the bunch of recyclers could have been fighting people not related to the war industry. A love story is forced into the story, but badly drawn, and the actors don't have any chemistry between them, so the whole thing feels heartless and unnecessary.

The viewer does not feel engaged or amused at times, although some others the plain persecution and espionage plot are funny and entertaining. On the other hand, the fact that those fighting the weapon industry are a gang of outcast people sends an unclear message to the viewer.

The acting is just mediocre mostly because of the script and poor dialogs; Dany Boon plays the same character over and over again in all his movies, and he's becoming a bore.

There are glimpses of the best Jeunet in Micmacs but, overall, the movie is not engaging or funny enough, and, what is worse, it is pretentious at times. Micmacs is Jeunet's worst film to the date. At its best, Micmacs is a robust, enjoyably lunatic game. It's social commentary by way of a good Looney Tune. The director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, has suggested the word "Micmacs" could be translated as "shenanigans" (meaning to be mischievous or deceitful). The rest of the title "à tire-larigot" could be translated as "non-stop" or "all the time" -- therefore, the title could be translated to English as "Non-Stop Shenanigans" or "Shenanigans All the Time".
